Life, career, and business CoacH for elt professionals

Hi, I’m Rachael.

Whenever people used to ask me, ‘What do you do?’, I used to hesitate. What should I mention first? Teaching and training? Writing? Coaching? And then I realised what they all have in common:

I help people grow.

I passionately believe in helping people to be the best that they can be, and to really live their best life. I mainly work with teachers and educational managers and freelancers because my thirty years’ experience within education means that I often ‘get’ a lot of what’s going on for them.

My Story

As a young adult, I was very underconfident and had an extremely active Inner Critic. I trained as an actor, but soon found I couldn’t deal with the constant rejection of auditions. I then fell into teaching by accident, and started to discover the joy of seeing lightbulbs go on for other people as a result of my help and guidance.  I found I loved teaching, and working with people closely.

After a few years I also started training teachers, and learnt more and more about the right (and wrong) way to give someone feedback, or to help them find their way (not telling them what to do).

Later I trained as a psychotherapist and counsellor, but wasn’t ready to do that professionally.  Partly I didn’t want to give up teaching, but, perhaps more to the point, I needed to finish sorting myself out. I spent another 16 years learning about and working on myself, letting go of unhelpful beliefs, changing how I behaved, freeing myself to live in a happier and more balanced way.

In 2017 I  went back and refreshed my training with a Diploma in Coaching, and started offering coaching sessions. Initially I called myself a life coach, but after a while I realised that a large part of what I was doing was career and small business coaching, passing on everything I’d learnt from having business coaching myself, and my 12 years’ experience as a small business owner.

It varies a great deal from client to client, but very often the work we do is a mixture of personal development, work on assertiveness, saying no, confidence and so on, practical skills such as time management, productivity, CV writing and interview preparation, and, where relevant, content marketing, selling, negotiating, building an audience and so on.

”Rachael worked with me to rediscover my strengths and to recognise the choices I have and the power to make them. I feel not just more confident but almost renewed.”

Why Work With Me?

Maybe you are feeling completely overwhelmed at work and fear you may be heading for burnout. I’ve been there.

Maybe you need some clarity about where your career is heading.

Maybe you’re a freelancer or considering going freelance or setting up your own business, and want some help to get consistent clients, charge what you’re worth, and get your name out there.

Maybe you know you’re getting in your own way, self-sabotaging or just holding yourself back, whether at work, or in your relationships, or in your relationship with yourself.

If you don’t change something, nothing will change.

experience and qualifications

I have been teaching, training and coaching for 30 years now, in a variety of settings: private and public sector, the UK and abroad, in teaching, training and management roles. I have a Certificate in Counselling and successfully completed a two year Diploma in Rogerian Person Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy, but due to unexpected life changes, did not manage to complete the 150 required hours practice at that time. Subsequently I qualified as a Life Coach through the Warwick University Diploma in Coaching. I am a full member of the Association for Coaching.

In addition I am a qualified teacher of Meditation, T’ai Chi and Chi Gung.
